چکیده

We investigated the speech intelligibility differences of normal and bone-conduction stereo headphones of target speech localized at 45◦ on the horizontal plane when competing noise is present. This was our effort to study the possible effect of crosstalk found in bone-conduction headphones on speech intelligibility. All sound sources were localized on the horizontal plane. Target speech was localized at 45◦ diagonal relative to the listener, while babble noise was localized at various azimuths and distances from the listener. The SNR was set to 0,-6,-12 dB. We found little difference in intelligibility by headphone types, suggesting that cross-talk in bone-conduction headphones have negligible effect on intelligibility.

Speech intelligibility for different spatial configurations of target speech and competing noise source in a horizontal and median plane

The speech intelligibility for different configurations of a target signal (speech) and masker (babble noise) in a horizontal and a median plane was investigated. The sources were placed at the front, in the back or in the right hand side (at different angular configurations) of a dummy head. The speech signals were presented to listeners via headphones at different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR)...

Intelligibility of bone-conducted speech at different locations compared to air-conducted speech

Bone-conduction transducers offer a unique advantage for radio communication systems, allowing sound transmission while the ear canals remain open for access to environmental sounds, or plugged for blocking of environmental sounds. This study compared the intelligibility of noise-degraded speech presented through bone-conduction hearing administered at different locations, and through air-condu...

On Measuring the Intelligibility of Synthetic Speech in Noise — Do We Need a Realistic Noise Environment?

Assessing the intelligibility of synthetic speech is important in creating synthetic voices to be used in real life applications, especially for the ones involving interfering noise. This raises the question how to measure the intelligibility of synthetic speech to correctly simulate such conditions. Conventionally, this has been done using a simple listening test setup where diotic speech and ...

Prediction of binaural speech intelligibility against noise in rooms.

In the presence of competing speech or noise, reverberation degrades speech intelligibility not only by its direct effect on the target but also by affecting the interferer. Two experiments were designed to validate a method for predicting the loss of intelligibility associated with this latter effect. Speech reception thresholds were measured under headphones, using spatially separated target ...
